The other day I was listening to The Mindvalley Show with Vishen and I had an insight that this will not only effortlessly enhance my life, but also makes me think about how I can utilize this to help my swimmers when we are building a new habit and learning a new skill like swimming.
One of the challenges as a coach guiding my future and current swimmers is this: "How do I get my students to do what THEY want?" We want to establish and come in with the same expectations so there is no miscommunication. These conversations are important inside the pool, and will benefit tremendously outside of the pool in life as well.
And speaking of which, do you have this daily challenges in life? “How do I get myself—and other people—to do what I want?” Whether you are a parent, a teacher, a you-name-it, we all face the same don't we?
Then I discovered the universal human TENDENCY from Gretchen Rubin, once we understand this and how we respond to expectations, we can find tools that work for us to build the skill and the life we want. When we look through our lens to accomplish our swimming goal, we can better find tools and strategies that will work for you. Isn't that amazing?!
Okay, does any of these resonate with you...
Why can other people rely on me, but I can’t rely on myself?
Why does it seem like I resist doing things I WANT to do?
Why doesn’t everyone do the things they say they are going to do like I do?
Why do I struggle to make decisions, often becoming overwhelmed by analysis paralysis?
Why can’t I make time for myself and the habits I know would make me happier and healthier?

If any of these questions crossed your mind when it comes to breaking through an old habit and belief, know that you are not alone and I struggle as well at times. However, when you understand why and see not only your perspectives but also from others' point of view, you start making sense of their actions and behaviours as well as your own.
I am fascinated by this and excited to discover whether you are: Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, or Rebel, so then we can learn to harness the strengths and counterbalance the negative aspects of your Tendency to achieve our aims. This is the pathway to becoming happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative, in the ways that work for you in swimming and in life!
